Discover Odisha's Stories
Pattachitra is the primary and most famous local art form associated with Odisha. It is a traditional form of cloth-based scroll painting, characterized by intricate and detailed artwork. Pattachitra painting has ancient origins and is deeply rooted in Odisha's cultural history. The word "Pattachitra" is derived from the Sanskrit words "Patta" meaning cloth and "Chitra" meaning picture. The art form dates back to at least the 5th century AD and is linked to the worship of Lord Jagannath in the region. Pattachitra artists were traditionally known as 'chitrakars' and were an essential part of temple rituals, narrating mythological stories and themes through their paintings
